Health testing is expensive but very worthwhile and necessary. Years ago we were told there were no health issues within the breed. Later we were told to x-ray hips only – so we did. Then we were told elbows were also important. Later we learned that was incorrect information.

Now we know Hips, Patella’s and Eye tests annually are all very important for the Shiba. Our goal is for our dogs to have all 3 tests filed with OFA and receive their CHIC number to verify. Our dogs with preliminary hip ratings (x-rayed younger than 24 months of age) will not qualify for CHIC until we send x-rays in for the final evaluation.

If you check the OFA breed statistics you will see thyroid and heart issues are not high percentages within the Shiba. Those with thyroid and heart problems will not be in the breeding pool. Some breeders do add those passing tests to their dogs record but it means very little.
